Alphabetizing questions
How are entries sorted?
Letter by letter by the first word of each entry, usually the first author’s surname. A leading “A”, “An” or “The” is ignored, as APA, MLA and Chicago all require, and accents sort with their base letter (é with e).
What does “Nothing before something” mean?
APA and Chicago sort a shorter surname before a longer one that starts the same way: Brown, J. comes before Browning, A.. The tool follows that rule.
Same author, several works?
APA orders them by year (oldest first); MLA and Chicago by title. Because each entry starts with the author, the tool keeps them together; check the order within the group against your style.
Will it keep my italics?
Paste from Word or Google Docs into the formatted box and italics are kept; the Copy button puts formatted text back on your clipboard.
