In-Text Citation Guide

Master in-text citations for APA, MLA, and Chicago formats

📝 What Are In-Text Citations?

In-text citations are brief references within your paper that direct readers to the full citation in your bibliography or reference list. They give credit to sources while you write, showing exactly where information came from without interrupting the flow of your text.

🎯 Why In-Text Citations Matter

✅ Academic Integrity

They prevent plagiarism by showing which ideas are yours and which come from other sources.

🔍 Reader Navigation

Readers can quickly locate the full source information in your bibliography to verify or learn more.

💪 Credibility

They demonstrate that your arguments are supported by credible research and authoritative sources.

📚 Knowledge Building

They help build the scholarly conversation by connecting your work to existing research.

📘 APA 7 In-Text Citations

Basic Format

Author-Date System:

(Author, Year) or (Author, Year, p. #)

Examples

1. Paraphrasing (One Author)

Recent research has shown that mindfulness can reduce stress levels (Smith, 2024).

Use when summarizing or paraphrasing someone's ideas

2. Direct Quote (with Page Number)

According to Smith (2024), "mindfulness practices lead to measurable improvements in stress management" (p. 45).

Always include page number for direct quotes

3. Two Authors

Multiple studies confirm this finding (Smith & Johnson, 2024).

Use "&" in parentheses, "and" in narrative citations

4. Three or More Authors

The research team found significant results (Smith et al., 2024).

Use "et al." (meaning "and others") from first citation

5. No Author (Use Title)

The study revealed unexpected patterns ("Climate Change Effects," 2024).

Use first few words of title in quotes

6. Organization as Author

The report shows alarming trends (World Health Organization, 2024).

Can abbreviate after first use: (WHO, 2024)

📌 APA Quick Rules

  • ✓ Use "&" in parenthetical citations, "and" when author is part of sentence
  • ✓ Include page numbers for direct quotes: (Smith, 2024, p. 45)
  • ✓ Use "et al." for 3+ authors from first citation
  • ✓ Separate multiple sources with semicolons: (Smith, 2024; Jones, 2023)
  • ✓ No comma between author and year if only two elements

📗 MLA 9 In-Text Citations

Basic Format

Author-Page System:

(Author Page#) or (Author)

Examples

1. Paraphrasing (One Author)

Recent research has shown that mindfulness can reduce stress levels (Smith 45).

Author's last name and page number, no comma

2. Direct Quote

Smith argues that "mindfulness practices lead to measurable improvements" (45).

When author mentioned in text, cite page only

3. Two Authors

Multiple studies confirm this finding (Smith and Johnson 32).

Use "and" (not "&") between authors

4. Three or More Authors

The research team found significant results (Smith et al. 78).

First author + "et al." from first mention

5. No Author (Use Title)

The study revealed unexpected patterns ("Climate Change" 12).

Shortened title in quotes, then page number

6. Website (No Page Number)

Online sources often lack pagination (Smith).

Use author only when no page numbers available

7. Long Quote (Block Quote)

This is a long quote that is more than four lines of text. It should be formatted as a block quote, indented from the left margin, with no quotation marks around it. The citation appears after the final punctuation.

(Smith 45)

Citation after period for block quotes (4+ lines)

📌 MLA Quick Rules

  • ✓ No comma between author and page number: (Smith 45)
  • ✓ No "p." or "pp." before page numbers
  • ✓ Use "and" (not "&") for multiple authors
  • ✓ If no page numbers, use author only: (Smith)
  • ✓ For multiple sources, separate with semicolons: (Smith 45; Jones 12)

📙 Chicago Style In-Text Citations

Note: Chicago has TWO systems. Choose one and use it consistently throughout your paper.

System 1: Notes-Bibliography (Most Common)

Uses footnotes or endnotes with superscript numbers:

According to recent research, mindfulness reduces stress.1

Footnote Examples

First Reference to Source

1 Jennifer Smith, Mindfulness and Stress (New York: Academic Press, 2024), 45.

Full note with complete publication information

Subsequent Reference (Same Source)

2 Smith, 67.

Shortened form: Author last name, page number

Article in Note

3 Michael Johnson, "Stress Management Techniques," Psychology Today 45, no. 3 (2024): 23.

Journal article with volume, issue, year, and page

System 2: Author-Date (Less Common)

Similar to APA:

(Author Year, Page)

Author-Date Examples

Basic Citation

Recent research shows positive effects (Smith 2024, 45).

Author, year, page - note the comma after year

Multiple Authors

The study confirms these findings (Smith and Johnson 2024, 78).

Use "and" between authors (not "&")

📌 Chicago Quick Rules

  • Notes-Bibliography: Use superscript numbers in text, full info in footnotes
  • ✓ First footnote = full citation, later ones = shortened
  • Author-Date: Use (Author Year, Page) format
  • ✓ Comma after year in author-date: (Smith 2024, 45)
  • ✓ Choose ONE system and stick with it throughout your paper

📍 Where to Place In-Text Citations

✅ At the End of Paraphrased Information

Place the citation at the end of the sentence, before the period: "This is the information (Smith, 2024)."

✅ After Direct Quotes

For short quotes, place citation after closing quotation mark: "Quote here" (Smith, 2024, p. 45).

✅ After Each Paragraph (If All from One Source)

If an entire paragraph summarizes one source, cite at the end. Make it clear throughout that you're discussing that source's ideas.

❌ DON'T: Cite Only Once for Multiple Paragraphs

Each paragraph with outside information needs a citation. Readers shouldn't have to guess what's cited.
